A Brief History.
Irwell Works Brewery is situated in the former ‘IRWELL STEAM, TIN, COPPER &
IRON WORKS’ on Irwell Street in Ramsbottom, Lancashire. The building dates from 1888 and
originally built for local coppersmith Richard Mason.

Used as an engineering works until a few years ago, Irwell Works now houses a 6BBL brewery
and brewery tap. The building is in a conservation area of the town and has been
sympathetically restored.

Brewing started in November of 2010 and ‘Copper Plate’ a 3.8% abv session bitter was
overall winner of the Bury Beer festival later the
same month. We now have four more standard
beers named after the works these are :
‘Steam Plate’ Best Bitter 4.3%abv,
‘Iron Plate’ Lancashire Stout 4.4%abv,
‘Tin Plate’ Dark Mild 3.6%abv and
‘Richard Mason’s 1888’ Pale Ale 4.0%abv.

To celebrate the opening of our brewery tap in
August 2011 we brewed two summer ales
namely ‘Mad dogs & Englishmen’ IPA 5.5%abv
and ‘Lightweights & Gentlemen’ a refreshing
light pale ale 3.2%abv.

We are still working on parts of the brewery and work is in progress to get the kitchen finished
in order to do food at lunchtimes. We will provide a small plates food service, namely small
portions of good Lancashire fayre, soups and breads.

We use our beer in our recipes too! We intend for the menu’s to be very small, fresh food
cooked the same day and once it’s gone it’s gone!
